Today’s run did not end as planned. I had split Today’s run did not end as planned. I had split off from Janet and Scott, about 10 miles in. It was super fun to catch up with them and I was feeling great.

I moved to a path near the high school roundabout, and a block later slipped on the ice, landing quickly on the ground. When I looked at my ankle, which was now perpendicular to my leg, I knew I was in trouble. I was able to call 911 and they transported me to the ER. Both tibia and fibula are broken, and I’ll need surgery.

Hopefully healing goes smoothly. I really pray it doesn’t leave me with anything lasting. I’m not sure what to expect. In the mean time I’m trying to learn how to use crutches, and Nate is installing a railing in our garage to help me to get up and down those steps.

As much as I hope the physical healing goes well, I hope I’m able to do well mentally through this. I am so purpose and goal oriented that I know I’ll struggle with feeling like I don’t have many of my previous goals/purposes. So, my challenge will be to find purpose in other things… work obviously came to mind (very thankful for numbers and reports to pour into!) and the girls reminded me that I don’t have Freya’s stocking done yet 🙂. Wish me luck. And maybe check in on me in a couple of weeks to make sure I’m coping okay…

Sigh.

Please, please be careful on the ice!

The last time I received any formal coaching was in 2018. During that time, I ran a 1:24 half marathon at the Fargo Marathon and a 3:07 at Grandma's. [From a 1:41 half marathon PR]

At the beginning of January 2019, I got a pretty severe stress fracture in my left sacral ala. Followed by a bad case of osteitis pubis/pubic rami stress reactions in September 2019. Followed by getting married and knocked up in April/May 2020. Followed by a stress fracture in my right sacral ala in September 2020. Followed by birthing my daughter in February 2021 and then finally actually have a stretch of life where I wasn't in some sort of compromised physical condition 😅😅😅

On a happy note, I also landed my dream job as a full-time marketing/business teacher at a brand new high school in the second largest school district in the state; I'm the head coach of the cross country and girls track and field teams; I advise DECA and run the school store; and co-advise the Knowledge Bowl Team.

I also have the coolest daughter ever, Layla, who will be two in February, and an awesome husband who is currently serving a 12-month deployment with the US Army National Guard.

I'm coming back to coaching because in the past working with Nichole I found that I was highly motivated by sharing the journey with someone who shared in the joy and excitement of my success, and could offer a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise that I could lean on and trust. I also really appreciate the mental load being lifted from shoulders; it is a lot easier for me to listen and execute, instead of trying to formulate and execute.

3.5 month PP training update: things are going rea 3.5 month PP training update: things are going really well! I’ve been consistently logging 40-45 mpw for the last month and feeling more like myself each week. At 8 weeks PP I ran the GAC alumni XC 5k in 22:05. At 11 weeks, I lowered that to 21:15. Then a 20:29 at 14 weeks. I’m looking forward to another time trial next week (4 months) and hope to break the 20 min barrier! I’ve done a lot of workouts with the top NHS varsity girls, which has been fun. They’re pulling me along with them as they get faster!

I also was pumped to hear I’m affiliated with @genucan again! It’s been a solid 10 years with the company. Love #ucan, love the company, and love that they still believe in me!

I’m concentrating on lowering my 5k time now before I ramp up mileage for a sub-3 attempt around 1 year PP. I’ve been able to eek out a sub-3 one year after each of my other 3 pregnancies, here’s hoping I can make it 4/4!

I absolutely love coaching these young ladies. The I absolutely love coaching these young ladies. They are so positive and so coachable - and their results are showing how hard they work and how much they believe in the program and each other. It is by FAR the deepest team Northfield has had in over two decades.

This week is peak week, so I had them tempo the first two miles of our home meet today. They executed to a T. And look at those smiles! This was obviously during the tempo section - at two miles I let them loose and they ran hard to still edge out FBO, 28-29 🤩

Looking forward to next week’s recovery week - and then seeing what they can do against the stiff competition at the Mustang Invite!

10 weeks old today! My, time has flown. In the ab 10 weeks old today!

My, time has flown. In the absolute best way! 🥰 Freya is rocking the 1.5 percentile for height (taking after mom) and 15th percentile for weight. She loves to eat, that’s for sure! Look at those cheeks and rolls!

My return to running has come slower this time around, but I know it will come. I don’t want to do too much too soon and risk injury or try to drop these extra 10#s of baby weight and not be able to nurse as well. Right now I’m at 40-45 miles/week with ~2 workouts a week. I did my first 5k at 8 weeks in 22:05. This weekend I’ll run the DJJD Outlaw Run 5k and I’m excited to see where I’m at now that I’m 10 weeks PP.

Onward and upward!

6 miles for 6 weeks of Freya! Time is going by w 6 miles for 6 weeks of Freya!

Time is going by way too fast. 6 weeks already?! We are sleeping 3-4 hours at a time, and she is now a little more alert for stretches during the day. She looks at everything with her big blue (!) eyes, inquisitively observing her environment 😍. Wonder what her little brain is thinking. She is still a super easy baby - 4/4 for our kids, yay!

Last week I ran 20 miles and this week will be close to 25. I think I could do more, but I’m trying to take things slow and prioritize consistency. Most days I contemplate whether to get out the door, honestly, but tell myself that consistency is what matters most now.

I did just one workout this week, concentrating on pace changes. That isn’t easy for me post C-section; knee drive and any snap are non existent now. I know it’ll come, but it’ll take a lot of work!

Next week I get to tackle 7 miles. Yikes! This is going to get long quickly!

Starting to “train” again! I am lucky to have Starting to “train” again!

I am lucky to have healed quickly, and at about 3 weeks was able to run/walk. At 4.5 weeks now, I’m feeling stronger by the day. My HR has come down every day for typical easy-run paces, and I also feel a tiny more spring in my stride vs when I first started running.

All of this has me SO HAPPY! I’ve asked my coach to start writing a plan for me, just knowing that I want to come back slowly and consistently - and that is hard for me to do on my own. I’ve started my typical weekly count-“up”, running 4 miles when Freya turned 4 weeks. This week I’ll get to tackle 5 miles.

Hopefully things continue to go well! I’m excited to know that any fitness and strength I build this time around will be something I can keep/build on! What a marvel idea 🙂

I received the best early birthday present yesterd I received the best early birthday present yesterday. Freya Nichole Porath joined our family a day earlier than she was scheduled to, after I woke up at 4am yesterday to contractions. She met us after a C section that afternoon, weighing just 5 pounds 10 ounces and measuring 20” long. She is our lightest baby - even lighter than Greta was (5 lb 12 ounces)! - but also our longest. We think she looks very much like Greta.

We were both thinking she would be a 7+ pound boy, so to have this peanut of a girl caught us by surprise! We had quite the list of Scandinavian girl names to test out on her; ultimately Nate was the one who thought she looked like a Freya. He also lobbied for using my name as her middle name - I lobbied for Margaret, his grandma’s name, but we had already used that middle name.

We are all doing really well. I’m particularly LOVING her baby snuggles and her tiniest of noises. She perfectly completes our family - I so look forward to all of our adventures together!🏔 🏃🏻‍♀️ 🎻🛝⚽️❄️
I woke up at 4am this morning to the start of cont I woke up at 4am this morning to the start of contractions! Our C section was supposed to happen tomorrow morning.

A peanut of a GIRL, 5 pounds, 10 ounces, greeted us about 10 hours later (they were so kind as to allow me to labor that long, ha! It took a long time to get the surgical team assembled I guess?). I’m shocked - I was expecting to meet a fairly large boy! I did tell Nate at the start of the C section that I was really hoping for a girl :). Wish granted! I can’t even tell you how in LOVE with her I am!

She is the lightest of all of our kiddos. Greta was 5 pounds 12 ounces, so very close, which boggles my mind as I was so sick with Greta! She is also the longest at 20”. Her feet look comically long on her super skinny legs. I’ll have to get a picture of her when she isn’t swaddled 🙂

No name yet as we hadn’t spent much time on girls names! Any Scandinavian/ old fashioned favorites (also needs to be easy to cheer!) of yours you’d like to pass along as suggestions? 😁
I had put away my running shoes for this pregnancy I had put away my running shoes for this pregnancy a couple of weeks ago (week 32). 🤰 It just wasn’t fun - I felt heavy, knew I was shuffling, and it just felt like so much WORK. No wonder some people hate running, I thought, if it feels anything like this for them. I was at peace with it, knowing my fitness would come back after baby comes. No use in pushing through now and hating the process.

Fast forward to this week (week 34) when Greta decided she wanted to do the full 5k at the Musky Fest race. The Minnow Run for kids around the block was too short to be fun, she said. I don’t know if it is renewed motivation, or if baby has settled a bit making it more comfortable for me (likely both), but these first few runs back have just been FUN! 🤩 Most have been with both Greta and Anna, and we are talking, laughing, and trying to spot interesting things along the run. One run we tried to get as far as we could before dad picked us up in the minivan. That was their favorite run; they thought it was such a fun “game”!

Today I did 5k with Nate and it was the best I’ve felt in over a month. 🤩

So, it looks like Greta will motivate me to keep running enough to run the 5k with her at 37 weeks (Nate is hoping to race it). Baby is scheduled to arrive less than a week later via planned C-section 😁.

Is this the start of the stage of life where I’m motivated to train to keep up with the kids?! If so, I’ll take it. 😍
